EIGHT of the 18 workers of Bank of Tanzania (BoT) reportedly employed corruptly, used forged certificates, the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam was told yesterday.
State Attorney Edgar Luoga, who is prosecuting a case against eight BoT officials, told Resident Magistrate Neema Chusi that the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) established the matter in 2005 following a tip-off.
“Upon receiving the information, PCCB investigated the matter accordingly and gathered employment applications and Form IV certificates of some employees, including the accused,” he said. In the case, the accused, Justina Mungai, Christina Ntemi, Siamini Kombakono, Janeth Mahenge, Beatha Masawe, Jacquiline Juma, Philimina Mutagurwa and Amina Mwinchumu are charged with forgery and uttering false documents to the bank.
Mr Luoga stated further that the bureau contacted the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) and established that the certificates of the accused were not genuine. He stated that PCCB investigators interviewed two NECTA officials, Glee Magembe and Nelson Mefali, who said that the information obtained from the council differed from what was used by the accused to secure employment at the central bank.
The prosecutor said it was at that point when the investigators interrogated all the accused, who allegedly admitted to have forged the certificates and uttered the documents at the central bank in order to secure employment. However, all the accused denied the memorandum of facts. Full hearing of the case starts on December 1. The prosecution is expected to call four witnesses, two from NECTA and two from PCCB. It is also expected to produce 19 exhibits.
