Dar es Salaam. Dr Didas Masaburi, the mayor of Dar es Salaam, has ordered the board of directors of the new Machinga Complex, which is located at Ilala, to review all contracts to traders who have rented stalls at the modern market.
Dr Masaburi, who made the call yesterday during his visit to the complex, ordered the management of the complex to reclaim all the stalls that are not operating and allocate them to new traders. He said it was important for the management and the board of directors to review the leasing contracts to make sure that the targeted group, the pet traders, were the ones benefiting from the facility.
According to him, the current situation suggested that the stalls were rented out to large-scale businesspersons who instead of doing business decided to lease them to pet traders at unaffordable rates.Dr Masaburi added that the management of Machinga Complex should allocate part of the modern complex to large-scale entrepreneurs.
“It is very important that you invent various ways to help us generate more revenues to enable us re-pay the loan that we hold… you should allocate part of the building to large-scale business establishments, such as supermarkets and banks, which would afford the rent instead of the struggling pet traders,” he said.
The outspoken mayor also told traders at the complex that his office, Dar es Salaam City Council as well as Ilala Municipal Council would engage in discussions to weigh the possibility of closing the nearby Mchikichini market.
He made the promise after various pet traders at the Machinga Complex complained that their businesses were suffering from the presence of the Mchikichini market.“As you know the Mchikichini market is under Ilala Municipal Council… we will need to have thorough discussions regarding the issue,” he told them. |
