The National Microfinance Bank (NMB) yesterday launched an electronic payment service which will enable customers to purchase electricity units through the bank`s ATMs to top up their pre-paid meters commonly known as LUKU.
NMB Chief Executive Officer Ben Christiaanse told a news conference during the launch in Dar es Salaam that the new product resulted from the business relationship between Tanesco and NMB.
He said LUKU recharge service is simple and convenient for customers as they will not need to carry cash but recharge vouchers from the bank`s ATM across the country.
``The NMB ATM systems have been set up to capture the bank card holders recharge transaction request and communicate online with Tanesco LUKU vending systems to request for electricity purchase,`` Christiaanse said.
He added: ``This service is for all NMB customers who are also Tanesco clients and it uses 20 digit-code,`` he said.
For his part, Tanesco`s managing director Idris Rashid said the product was one amongst various efforts his company was taking to improve customers` services.
He said one of the greatest outcries regarding customer services was the hassles they experienced in making payment for services delivered.
The MD said customers were forced to walk long distances searching for LUKU vending stations adding that in some instances went without power due to delays in reaching the stations.
He said the LUKU recharge via NMB ATMs was a great relief to their customers as they will be able to recharge their meters twenty four hours a day.
