Standard Chartered Bank has supported 143 of its Small Medium Enterprise (SME) customers from eight African countries to attend the on-going Hong Kong Trade and Development Corporation annual exhibition for SMEs, known as the Expo.

According to a bank`s statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Expo would provide a platform for SMEs to showcase their businesses.

``It will also provide a truly international market place for SMEs to develop business partnerships, exchange ideas, discuss issues and opportunities and use the exclusive business advisory services on offer,`` reads part of the statement.

Chris Gumbe, the bank`s Head of SMEs banking in Tanzania, said in the statement that in view of the growing trade trends between Asia and Africa, his bank was geared towards helping its customers in Tanzania and the whole of Africa to take advantage of the trend.

``We are very pleased to be able to support 143 of our valued SMEs African customers in Hong Kong. It is a great example of our unique business of combining local knowledge of our African customers with our international expertise and experience. Three of these customers are from Tanzania,`` Gumbe said.

Other countries in which the bank has supported its SMs customers for the exhibition include Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Standard Chartered has been operating in Africa for more than 140 years. The bank currently has over 150 branches in 13 African countries. Part of Standard Chartered`s economic contribution to Africa is the bank`s commitment to financing emerging trade corridors.

The statement said the bank expects that SMEs will be the main driver of sustainable economic growth in Africa over the next ten years.
