BANK M DEFENDS WEEKEND OPERATIONS

BANK M (Tanzania) Limited, the newly established commercial bank in the country, has defended its decision of remaining open late in the evening and Sundays.

"We want our clients, manufacturers and traders, not to take the risk of keeping their collections at homes and business premises.

"They can comfortably do banking activities during evenings and weekends depending on the nature of their business," Bank M Director of Communications Johnson Mshana said in a statement yesterday.

Banking service in Tanzania is normally closed at between 3:00pm and 5:00pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, some banks are open between 9:00 and 1:00pm. On Sunday they remain closed.

"In today's economic competition where cost effectiveness and efficiency are paramount, manufacturing units, marketing outfits, supermarkets, retailers and the like work through weekends and Sundays.

"Regrettably these businesses do not get banking service during these extended working periods leaving them to carry the huge risk of keeping cash at business premises attracting burglars and thieves," he explained.

Mr Mshana said the new bank would help the customers to plan their operations from Sunday to Sunday without the worry of risks which otherwise should be the responsibility of their bankers.

"Our bank is dedicated to facilitate and enhance business activities hence we have created all the suitable delivery channels for our esteemed customers," he said.
