AFDB EMBARKS ON HORTICULTURE SUPPORT

THE African Development Bank (AfDB) will finance an initiative
aimed at increasing household incomes of smallholder horticultural producers in Kenya, it was announced yesterday.

The governing body of the bank last week approved 26.05
million US dollars loan to finance the Small-scale Horticulture
Development Project (SHDP), AfDB said in a statement
released in Tunis.

"The overall goal of the project is to contribute to poverty
reduction and enhance food security," it said.

According to the statement the project would focus on irrigation, inputs supply and marketing.

The project will be implemented in 8 districts namely, Machakos, Narok, Nakuru North, Kajiado, Loitokitok, arakwet, Mbeere and Meru South districts.

The area has a total population of 4,428,519 people out of
which 52 per cent are women.

Although the irrigation schemes will directly benefit 5,812
households, it is estimated that over one million people in the
districts will indirectly benefit from irrigation schemes, horticultural production and marketing, income generating activities, catchment's conservation and extension services.
