VODACOM Tanzania's M-Pesa will soon start providing international money transfer services, the firm's senior official announced in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
"International money transfer services will be available in a couple of weeks. Our clients will be able to receive money from abroad or transfer money abroad," the Vodacom's Executive Head of Financial Services, Mr Jacques Voogt, said.
He said the move followed the firm's success in its M-Pesa service introduced in April 2008. Mr Voogt said M-Pesa was currently handling monthly transactions worth 350bn/- and prospects for further growth are bright.
"We expect the capacity would soon be doubled," he said. M-Pesa, according to Vodacom officials, has helped to boost delivery of financial services to millions of Tanzanians who have no easy access to banks.
Official records show that about 80 per cent of Tanzanians, particularly those living in rural areas lack bank accounts and access to formal financial services.
Meanwhile, Vodacom Tanzania yesterday unveiled an extra new look for its M-Pesa service. "The new look will match the slogan 'Kazi ni Kwako' (the ball is now in your court) by linking this service with the work done by 'Superman' -- which is fast, safe and certain," said Vodacom Chief Officer (Marketing and Corporate Affairs), Ms Mwamvita Makamba.
"We are fully committed to improving our M-Pesa services for our customers' benefit and all Tanzanians," she added.
