Tanzania: Exim Bank launches internal training

EXIM BANK Tanzania has launched its own in-house Management and leadership development programme dubbed e-Mpower, with a theme ‘Innovation is Life’, in Dar es Salaam aiming on empowering its staff.

Exim Bank’s Chairman, Yogesh Manek said at the inaugural event in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday that the bank strongly believes that efficient and effective achievement of its strategic and financial objectives depends on skills of its staff.

“Capability building is central to organisational performance and requires systematic management approach to learning and development as an integral part of workforce planning which is one of the key reasons for establishing the Staff Training Centre in year 2008”.

“The bank’s training centre has come a long way since its inception offering varied types of programmes for employees at all levels in the organisation," said Mr Manek.

Mr Dinesh Arora, the Bank’s General Manager, said that the bank has a commendable internal recruitment and promotion policy whereby nearly all managerial positions at the branches are held by employees who have grown over.

Most started as bank officers and rose to Branch Heads, Assistant Branch Heads and Operation Managers. He further emphasized that such policy needs to be supported by an ongoing effort to develop personal and management skills of employees.

However, the Bank’s Chief said that today’s challenging market circumstances and competitive environment necessitate that organisations enable learning environments so that people can get the required knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet the challenges of their roles.

Exim Bank’s Training and Devolopment Manager Ms Priti Punatar said that eMpower has been designed in the first year to offer in house five different management competences to nearly 100 trainees from varied managerial and supervisory levels in the Bank.

“This programme will continue in the next two years with more advanced level programmes as an effort to continually grow management and leadership competences while at the same time run in a cyclic fashion for promoted employees every year.

As part of its succession planning and people development responsibility this programme will also be offered to high potential non-managerial positions”, said M s Punatar.

Emphasizing further, the bank’s chief, Dinesh Arora said that while at a conceptual stage the bank now wishes to design and develop an in-house Professional Banking Programme to cater for bank officers to offer them needed knowledge at varied levels and specializations.
