Dar es Salaam — CRDB Bank has undergone a major improvement to protect its clients against cyber criminals, managing director Charles Kimei says. Cyber theft is one of sophisticated crimes, with banks believing that they are more susceptible to online fraudsters than any other criminals.
According to Dr Kimei, the cyber theft is a deliberate act of omission or commission by any person and is carried out in the course of banking transactions or in the books of accounts, resulting in wrongful gains to any person for a temporary period or otherwise, with or without any monetary loss to the bank.
He explains that a bank fraud is a result of collusion between the bank's management and its workers where computers are infected with viruses with key logging software to steal user names, passwords, financial data and other information.
He told The Citizen that what the bank does is to ensure at all times the money of the depositors is not drawn fraudulently. "Our banking system has been taking care of all segments of our financial development."
Fears over cybercrime are to be expected in the digital age. People have experienced fraudulent behaviours over the Internet including fraudulent emails, credit card fraud and unauthorised bank transfers.
Meanwhile, the CRDB Bank plans to double the number of TemboCard MasterCard users by the end of this year.
The bank has surpassed its target of TemboCard MasterCard users by 18 per cent to 120,000. According to managing director Charles Kimei, the increase will be driven by modern banking system and services.
The bank will also increase the number of branches, electronic distribution channels and consumer finance products as well as mobile banking services.
