CECAFA BOOSTED BY BARCLAYS

THE CAF-Cecafa under 17 youth football tournament in Bujumbura, Burundi has received a major boost following the announcement by Barclays Bank Tanzania that they are putting in US dollars 17,000.

The sponsorship was announced in Dar es Salaam yesterday by the bank's spokesperson, Mwajumbe Chamangwana.
She said the money should go towards prizes for the 10-day tournament that ends on Sunday at the Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium in Bujumbura.

Appreciating the sponsorship, Cecafa General Secretary, Nicholas Musonye of Kenya said it was a big boost to youth football in the region.

"The young players had exhibited good football and that it was good that they would be going home with some money," Musonye told a Press

Conference in Bujumbura.
The sponsors have given the breakdown as follows: Winners USD 10,000
Runners up USD 5,000 and third-placed USD 2,000.

This inaugural under-17 tournament is also sponsored by the African Football Confederation (CAF) and the Burundi government. The trophy has been donated by President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania.

The tournament will give way to the inaugural Cecafa women's
Challenge Cup to be held in Zanzibar in October.
Eight countries have so far confirmed their participation. Musonye said he expects a lot of support for this tournament.
