Tanzania: Private companies eye flyover project

PRIVATE investors have shown interests in constructing commercial flyovers in Dar es Salaam in order to ease traffic congestion in the city.

The Minister for Works Dr John Magufuli said on Wednesday that the arrangement through the Public Private Partnership (PPP), would lead to the adoption of the practice which has been successful in other developing countries.

He said the initiative, currently on the drawing board, will join other projects of building at least four flyovers in the heavily congested Haven of Peace.

He insisted that the aim of the initiative would be to do away with serious road congestions that is causing massive loss to the national economy.

Dr Magufuli was making a briefing on the advent of the "Works Week" that took off yesterday as part of his ministry's 50th Independence Anniversary activities.

The week is expected to climax on September 5 with an annual meeting of the contractors, an event expected to be graced by President Jakaya Kikwete.

He also outlined the development of 80km of various city road networks that he said are under different implementation stages.

"The construction work on these roads are going on smoothly and many are anticipated to be completed by next year," said the minister.

On the World Bank-funded Dar Rapid Transit System (DART), under the Prime Minister's Office, he said,it was progressing well and that a contractor was now being sought.

He also said that the proposed Kigamboni Bridge project was at an advanced stage of implementation, with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the government having set aside funds for it.

"The implementation of the project has started and an Egyptian company has been contracted to undertake the designing of the bridge," he said.

He further noted that NSSF would finance the project by 60 per cent while the remaining 40 per cent would be met by the state.
