Banking help for homeless people

A charity which helps socially-excluded people access bank accounts is to open more offices in Scotland after being given £269,472 in lottery funding.

Glasgow-based Grand Central Savings is to open new offices in Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Aberdeen.

It said the funding would allow it to help up to 3,400 people move out of homelessness and into new tenancies.

The charity is one of 11 projects in Scotland to share in £4,619,064 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Grand Central Savings was set up in 2001 to help people who, without access to a bank account, found it difficult to save money or to put a deposit down on accommodation.

Chief executive, Jackie Cropper, said: "Up till now, a lack of resources has meant that we have only been able to offer our service to people living in the Glasgow area.

"Now, thanks to the Big Lottery Fund, financially-excluded individuals the length and breadth of Scotland will be able to benefit from our operations.

"The award will also allow us to expand the range and scope of services on offer, meaning that existing as well as new customers will benefit."
