A bank official accused of trying to steal Sh10.5 million has been placed under police custody, thanks to a guard.
Police found the suspect with the money stashed in polythene bags hidden in a room within Guardian Bank’s Kisumu branch offices.
The money was part of Sh14.5 million in transit to the Central Bank in Kisumu Town.
The official’s initial attempt to escape with the cash was ruined by a bank guard, who insisted on inspecting the bags.
Other guards hired to transport the money found the cash box with just Sh4 million, Sh10.5 million less. They reported the matter to Kisumu Central Police Station.
Police confirmed the official was one of the bank’s signatories to transit cash. The 3pm incident interrupted bank operations for hours as detectives questioned employees.
Police suspect the official put away the bulk of the money at the time he was packing the rest in the cashbox.
The official later took the investigators to a room in the bank where the money was found hidden.
The suspect was taken to the police station to help with investigations.
