The National Bank of Commerce will launch a special account for students in institutions of higher learning today.
The account to be known as NBC Student Savings Account and will serve students aged between 18 and 25 years, according to a statement issued yesterday.
`The savings culture is critical for our students to adapt at an early stage, especially in a dynamic economy like ours. NBC Student Savings Account offers students a safe, convenient and affordable way to save money and earn interest throughout their student years,` the statement read in part.
It said NBC Student Savings Account, among others will offer students subsidised banking fees throughout their years of study.
The total number of public and private universities and colleges was 30 by the end of December 2006, whilst the total student population was 52,837, according to the statement.
`This number is expected to increase this year, thus confirming the emergence of a new market segment with specific financial needs. The introduction of NBC Student Savings Account aims to cater for this growing market,` said the Managing Director, Christo de Vries.
